Museum Penzberg

Not far from Kochel am See is the Museum Penzberg, which houses the largest collection of Heinrich Campendonk’s works in the world. This is an art and town museum in Penzberg in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau. Reopened in 2016, the museum’s twin building has become an attraction in the cityscape with its vibrant dark clinker brick façade.

For wellness lovers

The Kristalltherme attracts visitors with a fantastic view of Lake Kochel. Pure bathing fun and relaxation. The various saunas invite you to relax. An absolute highlight is the Herzogstand sauna, from where you have a great view of the mountain peak of the same name. After a relaxing sauna session, you can cool off and refresh yourself directly in the lake. Treat yourself to a few hours of rest and relaxation in the approx. 12,000 square metre spa.

Walchensee adventure power station

A nice family excursion destination is the Walchensee adventure power station. In the visitor centre you can learn very clearly how a hydroelectric power station works. There are also many hands-on activities, turbine models and interactive displays. Just the thing for families or school trips interested in history and energy production.

Open-air museum in Glentleiten

The open-air museum in Glentleiten is worth a visit even in bad weather, according to the motto: There is no bad weather, only bad clothes. Because this museum is not only open when the sun is shining, but only in the summer months. What is the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum anyway?

It is the museum of the district of Upper Bavaria for the rural life, living and economy of past centuries. Every year there are various special exhibitions, craft demonstrations and different children’s programmes outdoors. So there is something for everyone, parents as well as children will get their money’s worth here.

The hike to the Herzogstand:

With its 1,731 metres of altitude, the Herzogstand is certainly not one of the largest mountains in the Bavarian Pre-Alps, but it is certainly one of those with the most beautiful views!

The starting point is on Kesselbergstraße in Kochel, where you will find a car park.

The trail is well signposted and shortly after the start of the hike you can let your eyes wander far into the distance and look down on Lake Walchen.

You can find a detailed map and more information about the ascent on the Internet, for example at Bergtour-Online.

We can especially recommend a stop at the mountain inn on the Herzogstand. There you can enjoy delicious Bavarian delicacies with the best distant view – just the right refreshment.

Passing the inn, you reach the Herzogstand summit in another 45 minutes. A must if you have already made it to the mountain inn. We promise you, the view will be worth it!

For all hiking enthusiasts, there is the option of continuing on the Panorama Trail to the neighbouring Heimgarten. There you have a wonderful view of the lowlands to the north and Lake Kochel. This secured ridge walk with magnificent views is also one of the absolute highlights for Munich excursionists.

Despite its title as an easy mountain hike, the hike to the Herzogstand is not to be underestimated. We recommend a climb with good fitness and good weather. Besides, the weather in the mountains can often change quickly. That’s why you should always have warm clothes with you.

Grandma’s spinach dumplings

A popular dish not only for vegetarians. Also our hostel mum Denise’s favourite dish.

The ingredients for 4 people are: 300g white bread, 125 ml milk, 800 g spinach, 30 g butter, 1 clove garlic, 1 onion, 2 eggs, 1 tbsp more, 2 tbsp breadcrumbs, 80 g butter, 4 tbsp grated parmesan, nutmeg, salt and pepper.

Preparation:Cut the bread into small pieces and moisten. Wash the spinach well and cook in salted water. Strain the spinach and squeeze well, then strain. Melt the butter and sauté the finely chopped garlic clove and onion in it. Add the spinach and steam for 5 minutes. Add the eggs and spinach to the bread and mix. Then season with salt, pepper, nutmeg. Add the flour and breadcrumbs. Form small dumplings from the mixture and then boil them gently for 15 minutes.

Tip:Serve with parmesan and melted butter!

The classic – Bavarian sausage salad with pretzels

A typical classic, perfect for snacks and as a side dish!

The ingredients for 4 people are: 750 g meat sausage, 3 red onions, 1 bunch of chives, 3 tbsp sweet mustard, 3 tbsp vinegar, salt, pepper, radish, 2-3 tbsp oil.

Preparation: Remove the skin from the sausage. Cut the sausage into thin slices. Peel the onions and cut into thin rings. Mix the vinegar and mustard and season with salt and pepper. Add the oil. Mix the sausage, onions and chives and pour the marinade over. Leave to infuse for approx. 30 minutes. Garnish the salad with radishes.

Tip: The sausage salad tastes particularly delicious with pretzels.

Kaiserschmarrn (pancakes)

A delicious sweet alternative. Whether as a main course or dessert. You can never say no to Kaiserschmarrn.

The ingredients for 2 people are: 80 g flour, 2 eggs, 1 tbsp vanilla sugar, pinch of salt, 125 ml milk, 1 tbsp sugar, 3 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp icing sugar.

Preparation: Preheat the oven to 160° convection oven. Separate the eggs and mix the egg yolks with the vanilla sugar, flour, milk and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Separately, beat the egg whites until stiff, gradually adding the sugar. Carefully fold the beaten egg whites into the batter.

Melt the 2 tbsp butter in a pan and add the batter. Bake over a medium heat for about 2 minutes. Cut the Kaiserschmarrn into quarters with a spatula and let it bake again. Place the pan in the hot oven for about 12 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and tear the patty into pieces with two forks. Sift the icing sugar over the top and spread the remaining butter on top. Caramelise the Schmarrn pieces over a medium heat, turning regularly. Just before serving, dust the Kaiserschmarrn with icing sugar.

This lake is often called the Bavarian Caribbean. With its crystal clear water, it invites you to swim on nice days. But even in winter, things don’t get boring with us. Snowshoe hikes and ski tours are a true dream on the summit of the Herzogstand and make every nature lover’s heart beat faster.

Change of place

All players sit in a circle of chairs. The game leader stands in the middle of the circle of chairs. She gives instructions like: “All children with blond hair change places.” Then all the children with blond hair change places. After a few changes of places, the game leader can also ask personal questions such as: “Who has siblings?”.

Attention: The game leader must show tact when choosing the questions.

The ball of wool

All the children are blindfolded or close their eyes – be careful, there is a risk of cheating ? They all move around the room and try to find the other children.

When 2 children meet they must first stop and agree on how they will maintain physical contact. For example, they can hold hands, hook or reach around the waist. Afterwards, the couples try to find other couples. In this way, smaller groups gradually form until all the children have become one big ball.

Attention: The game leader must keep an overview. If a child does not find a connection, she may have to help.

Which animal are you?

Animal roles are suitable for drawing out children’s sensitivities. The children stand in a circle. One by one, a child steps into the middle of the circle. The game leader asks: “Which animal are you right now?” and the children slip into their roles. After the circle game, the circle dissolves and all the children run through the room as animals. First each animal for itself. After a short time, the animals can make contact. You can ask the group: What is it like when hare and fox meet? Or when deer and tiger meet?

Attention: The leadership should give each child enough time to really bring their animal to life.

The snake game

The group forms a long queue. They walk one after the other through the room. The first child starts with a movement. The other children pick up the movement and imitate it. When the movement has reached the last child, the last child may join the front. Later, noises may also be added.

Attention: The game can also be played on speed. The aim is to make movements and sounds move from the “head” to the “tail” as quickly as possible so that the last child in the queue can quickly move to the front to the first position.

1. You become more attentive!

When you walk alone through nature, you will suddenly notice completely different things: many small details, such as the chirping of birds. You will be able to enjoy the beauty of nature in a completely different way because, unlike when travelling with friends, you will talk less and pay attention to many other things. If you look closer, you will realise that the beauty of the world lies in the smallest details and that the world has more to offer than just famous sights.

2. You get to know new people!

People are comfortable. When he is out with friends, he automatically doesn’t communicate as much with his environment. When you are travelling alone, it is easier but also more necessary to meet people. What could be better than meeting new friends? Our hostel often hosts guests from all over the world. So why not listen to the stories of other guests and get to know new cultures over a bike drink.

3. Your language skills improve!

Another advantage is that you can improve your English skills by talking to guests from other countries. If there is any uncertainty, you can always communicate with your hands and feet. You are sure to experience funny moments and the fun will certainly not be neglected.

1. Watch out, security guard!

The players line up standing in a circle. One player is blindfolded and stands in the middle of the circle. He gets a newspaper in his hand and a bunch of keys is placed in front of his feet. The players in the circle must now try to steal the key. If the “watchman” thinks he hears something, he may strike around with the newspaper roll. Therefore, the other players must try to proceed as quietly as possible. Another variation would be the following: each teammate has a clothespin that they must try to clip onto the clothes of the player in the middle.

2. Who will survive?

This game can be played on an open space at night or in a dark room. All players, except one, get a glow-in-the-dark bracelet. The individual player is the offender and gets a softball. He tries to throw off the other players. If a teammate was hit, he must hand over the bending light and thus becomes a co-perpetrator. Whoever has the last bend light at the end survives.

3. Capture the Flag

A popular classic. The players are divided into two teams of equal size. Both teams have their own territory staked out. Both teams have a flag that must be placed in the ground in their own territory in a clearly visible place. The aim of the game is to bring the opponent’s flag into your own territory. But you can’t get caught in the process. If you get knocked off by the opposing player, you go to the opposing prison. This is guarded at a distance of 3 meters by a prison guard of the respective team. A player can only be released if a player of his own team knocks him off. If the flag is successfully stolen, it must be put in the ground of your own territory. So the game is over ?
